This is the website of Alan Thomas, who will from September 1 be Head of Department and Professor of Philosophy at the University of York in the UK. For the first two years of this appointment he will also be principal investigator of the Templeton Project (funded via St. Louis University) on 'The Moral Psychology of Inequality'. Thomas was previously Professor of Ethics at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. Educated at Cambridge, Harvard (as a Kennedy Scholar), and Oxford Universities he has held visiting appointments at the University of British Columbia, a Fellowship at the Murphy Institute of Tulane University, was a School Visitor at the ANU in 2013, a Visiting Research Professor at the Templeton funded research project 'The Philosophy and Theology of Intellectual Humility' at St. Louis University in Spring 2015 and a Visiting Fellow of the Humanities Research Centre of the ANU in July-August 2015. His interests in philosophy include moral and political philosophy, epistemology and the philosophy of mind. His next book, Republic of Equals: Predistribution and Property-owning Democracy is the first book-length study of so-called "pre distributive" egalitarian strategies. It will be published by Oxford University Press (USA) in 2016. His next book, The Verdict of Reasons (planned for publication in 2018) brings together various papers on moral particularism into a novel defence of that view. In addition to research in philosophy Thomas have been the director of a research centre and has worked as an REF consultant in the UK.
